Ashton Nicewonger is a senior at Furman University in Greenville, SC finishing a degree in Music and French. She hails from Pelion, SC, which has two stoplights in total, but this next year she will be spending a semester living in Versailles in France and a month living in Belize with the Biology department at Furman for fun. She enjoys learning literally everything and can’t seem to make her mind up on what to study next, so she plans to take a gap year or two before deciding what to go to grad school for. Coming to West Virginia every summer for science camp is one of her favorite things to do– she was a delegate in 2013 from South Carolina and immediately knew she wanted to come back on staph. Since then she has been a part of the music program in 2015 and 2016 and can’t wait to return in 2017 after graduating from Furman. When she isn’t in class, she is usually working– she works for the Modern Languages and Literatures Department at Furman as an assistant secretary and a tutor for French courses; for the Music Department as a teaching assistant for music theory courses, a recording engineer for recitals, and tutor for music history courses; and for the St. James Episcopal Church as a choral scholar. Besides work, she enjoys listening to all sorts of music; watching Parks and Recreation, Bob’s Burgers, Archer, Rick and Morty, and other comedic television shows; lifting weights and swimming; playing Pokemon; reading novels in the Western canon, especially by Steinbeck; taking online courses for fun; participating in the university’s LGBTQ+ and secular humanism groups on campus; and spending time with her two little brothers and her Nana and Papa back home in Pelion.
