Ximena Bonilla

ximena-bonillaXimena was a NAYSLI (North American Youth Science Leadership Institute) delegate in 2002, and staph member on several occasions since then. Ximena obtained her medical degree in General Medicine from the Universidad Autonoma de Coahuila in Mexico on 2009 where she was involved in student government and teaching, and was a founding member of the local chapter of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA). She also worked as an assistant in the surgery lab for four years, becoming head instructor in 2007 and received awards for work in academics and community development from her University.

After medical school Ximena earned a MSc in Medical Genetics from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. She is currently working on her PhD at the University of Geneva, Switzerland investigating how an extra chromosome affects genome dynamics, using Trisomy 21 as a model. In her free time, Ximena enjoys reading historical and science fiction books, folding modular origami, handcrafts, traveling and hiking.
